Meet Our Team

Our aim is to provide compassionate, professional care for our patients and their owners.  To this end we endeavour to treat your pets as we would treat our own ... and treat you as we would like to be treated ourselves.

Greg Thompson BVSc

Veterinarian and Hospital Director

We took over Richmond Vet Hospital in July 1988 when it was just a small branch practice to Riverstone, only open a couple of hours a day for consultations and with no facilities for surgery or hospitalisation.  Greg was an enthusiastic young vet surgeon, 3 years out of university ready to run his own practice and Neile was an advertising executive who didn't want to commute back into the city every day, loved animals, believed wholeheartedly in Greg's abilities and goals and so became a vet nurse over night ... the rest, as they say, is history.

Our aim was to create full A Class vet hospital that gave ‘complete’ care for small animals and their owners, professional and empathetic, based on the belief that each pet is an important member of the family.

We’ve built a dedicated and professional team of Nurses and Veterinarians all of whom are committed to providing the best care and treatment for their patients.   Continuing education for all staff and ongoing reinvestment in equipment, technology and facilities support this commitment.

In 1998 we opened Wilberforce Vet Hospital.  All the staff work at both practices so the same standard of care and professionalism is carried through both hospitals.

Over the last 30+ years at Richmond and 20+ years at Wilberforce, we’ve been privileged to be part of the lives of many, many Hawkesbury families.  Sharing the joy of new pets – be they puppy, kitten, cat, dog, bird, guinea pig, ferret, rat, chook, duck or even axolotl - when they join the family, all the ups and downs over the years as they mature and the great sadness and loss at the end of their lives.

We’re now treating the loved pets of second and even third generation clients!  ... and we're still working happily together!

Tom Winters BVSc

Veterinarian (BVSc)

Dr Tom Winters graduated with a BVSc from The University of Sydney in 2012.  Since then he has been enjoying treating the wide variety of animals at both our hospitals.  He has a personal interest in diagnostic imaging, surgery and the medical management of complex diseases.  He enjoys finding the best possible treatment for every animal.

Outside of work he enjoys soccer, time with his wife and going to the park with his friendly Border Collie named Indie

Jennifer Poon BVSc

Veterinarian (BVSc)

Jennifer joined the team in December 2010 after graduating from the University of Sydney.  Since then she has enjoyed getting to know regular and new pets to Richmond & Wilberforce Vet Hospitals and their families.

Growing up with dogs, cats, fish and a rabbit, Jennifer has always had a love for animals from a young age.  Being able to provide preventative care for healthy pets as well as helping sick or injured pets and wildlife has been a lifelong goal.  Jen's areas of interest include ophthalmology (eyes), dental cases and cuddle time with our boarders.

In her downtime she enjoys reading, playing sports and being owned by her dog and two cats that she hand raised from tiny little motherless strays

Mechelle Hughes

Head Nurse (Certificate IV - Veterinary Nursing; BN - Bachelor of Nursing (Human))

Mechelle has lived in the Hawkesbury for most of her life.  She achieved her Vet Nursing qualifications at Ultimo TAFE whilst working at a small animal hospital for a number of years before switching to a larger mixed practice where she held the title of Head Nurse.  Mechelle then followed her passion for horses and joined a large equine practice enjoying the hands-on approach with those gentle giants for a number of years.

Mechelle began working at Richmond Vet back in the very early good old days when it was just Greg, Neile and a nurse or two ... How things have changed since then!

Mechelle strongly believes in continuing education and over the years has achieved a Bachelor of Nursing degree (for people, that is) and certificates in Pathology speciment collection, Vocational Training & Assessment and Pet Nutrional Advisor & Counselor with Royal Canin and Hills diets.
